Thirteen Baby Ducks Are Born in Silver Spring Retirement Community

 

The following information was sent to us by Mel Tansill: 

Thirteen baby ducks have just been born in the courtyard of the Renaissance Gardens extended care neighborhood at Riderwood retirement community in Silver Spring, MD. Mallards have mysteriously come to Renaissance Gardens each spring for the past few years to give birth to their babies. They then leave by summer to explore new worlds of wonder.

Georgetown University Hospital Honors JUST TRYAN IT with 2012 “Flame of Hope” Award

The following information was sent to us by Stacy Prince:

Georgetown University Hospital is recognizing local non-profit, JUST TRYAN IT (JTI), with the 2012 “Flame of Hope” award for its efforts in helping children and families battling childhood cancer. This is the first time the award will be presented to an organization.

The Flame of Hope award will be presented at the 13th annual Georgetown Pediatrics Gala on April 14, 2012. Past recipients of the award have included Former First Lady Laura Bush, actor Paul Michael Glaser, former Second Lady Tipper Gore, former Washington Redskins player and NFL Hall of Fame member Darrell Green, NBC4 news anchor Barbara Harrison, and children’s health advocate Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

On Wednesday, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Montgomery TennisPlex facility located at 18010 Central Park Circle. Leggett will join Montgomery County Planning Board Director Francoise Carrier and Montgomery Parks Director Mary Bradford, as well as Montgomery TennisPlex Founder and Hall of Fame Coach Jack Schore and World Team Tennis Champion and Washington Kastles Owner Mark Ein.

A Preview of Spaces 17, 18 & 19 at the 2012 DC Design House

 

This is the Sixth of an Eight-Part Feature on the designers’ vision and progress at the DC Design House, which is underway and set to open on April 14th.

The top floor of the Fifth Annual DC Design House includes three spaces. Susan Nelson of Susan Nelson Interiors of Great Falls, VA, www.susannelsoninteriors.com, is designing Space 17, the Daughter’s Bedroom. By combining block and geometric prints in green, yellow, pink, brown and cream, Nelson creates a cozy haven. “By using a mix of new and repurposed furniture, the room has a quality of changing along with the girl,” Nelson says. For instance, the coverlet features a sophisticated fabric with a watercolor quality, while the club chair is slipcovered in a fun confetti print in pinks and purples that the “daughter” might have loved as a child.
