Washington Humane Society Urges Public to Protect Pets from Extreme Heat

This story comes to us from Jacquie Toppings:

Washington D.C. – The Washington, D.C. area is under a heat advisory, and the Washington Humane Society (WHS) is reminding pet companions to pay special attention to their animals during extreme high temperatures.

“Pets are vulnerable in severe heat, and they depend on their caretakers to provide what is needed for them to stay healthy and cool,” said Scott Giacoppo, Vice President, External Affairs & Chief Programs Officer, Washington Humane Society. “When warm weather is uncomfortable for people, it can quickly lead to life-threatening heat exhaustion in pets.”

The Washington Humane Society offers the following tips to keep pets safe during the current heat advisory and upcoming warm summer months:

Montgomery County Humane Society Introduces New Pre-Adoption Spay-Neuter Program

Montgomery County Humane Society Introduces New Pre-Adoption Spay-Neuter Program

The Montgomery County Humane Society  is introducing a new pre-adoption program to spay or neuter all animals adopted from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.  Spay-neuter charges will be a flat fee of $70 for a cat or kitten and $120 for a dog or puppy.

Several veterinary clinics are partnering with MCHS to provide this service.  An adopter will complete the paperwork at the shelter, MCHS will arrange for transport and surgery, and the adopter will pick up the animal directly from the veterinary clinic.

Hundreds of homeless animals are brought to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter every month in the warm weather.  This new initiative is an effort to reduce the number of homeless animals that are in need of care and shelter.
