Montgomery County Public Libraries Hosts"Meet the Author" Programs Featuring Local Writers

Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will host three “Meet the Author” programs in October featuring local authors.

On Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m., Olga Grushin, author of “The Line” and “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” will be at the Silver Spring Library, 8901 Colesville Rd.

Grushin’s first novel, “The Dream Life of Sukhanov,” won the 2007 New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award and was chosen as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a Washington Post Top Ten Best Book of the Year. Her second novel, “The Line,” published in April 2010, was chosen as an Editors' Choice book by The New York Times. She is now at work on her third book.

On Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m., novelist and short story writer Dolen Perkins-Valdez will be at Marilyn J. Praisner Library, 14910 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville for a reading and book signing of her debut novel, “Wench.”

The story is based on a little-known historical fact that follows the lives of four women at a resort popular among slaveholders who bring their enslaved mistresses. Dolen Perkins-Valdez's fiction and essays have appeared in “Robert Olen Butler Prize Stories 2009,” “The Kenyon Review,” “PMS: PoemMemoirStory,” “North Carolina Literary Review,” and the “Richard Wright Newsletter.”

On Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m. at the Damascus Library, 9701 Main St., Susan Froetschel, author of three mystery novels -- “Alaska Gray,” “Interruptions” and “Royal Escape” -- will discuss her writing and present an informal workshop, including tips on getting started with plot, characters and setting for a mystery novel

Froetschel has written for the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, Boston Business Journal, Hartford Business Journal, House Beautiful, Alaska Magazine and other publications.
