Two free film events for Labor Day Weekend

Two free film events for Labor Day Weekend

A few months back I told you about local filmmaker Anthony Greene and his short film anthology A World At Work. Anthony has two new events this week, once again bringing culture to the East side of the Anacostia.

The first is Art Behind the Art, an exhibition at Blank Space SE of behind-the-scenes photography from local film sets. There will be an opening reception at the gallery this Friday September 2 at 7PM. The show will run for a week and coincide with Anthony's second event, The East of the River Film Festival.

Help Break a World Record at UkeFest 2011!

Calling all ukulele players young and old to Strathmore’s free outdoor summer concert series: UkeFest 2011!

On Wednesday, August 24th beginning at 7 p.m., join hundreds on the lawn at Strathmore to pluck, pick and strum their way to a Guinness World Record for Largest Ukulele Ensemble. The current record for Largest Ukulele Ensemble was set on June 20, 2009 at the London Uke Festival where 851 uke players performed in unison.

“We’re hoping to have at least 852 Ukulele players because that’s what we need in order to break the Guinness Book of World Records. They don’t have to be experienced players, they just have to be players,” said Strathmore’s Shelley Brown.

Ukuleles will be available to purchase on site beginning at $30 from House of Musical Traditions. A notary will be in attendance to verify the final count.
