December 28 marked a significant drop in temperatures coinciding with the Grand Opening of the Rockville Town Square Ice Rink where hundreds of residents came out to see spectacular fireworks, sip on hot chocolate and skate to music.

"We are happy to get people out of their houses and moving in the middle of winter. This ice rink is very special to Rockville and a terrific addition to our city. It just shows that Rockville has it all," said Rockville Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio.

American Figure Skater and former Olympian, Kimmie Meissner gave a special performance and signed autographs to officially open the rink to the public.

Originally from Bel Air, Maryland; Meissner was the 2006 World Champion in Figure Skating and that same year, a proud member of the U.S. Olympic games where she was the youngest to compete.

At age 17, Meissner placed sixth in the free skate and overall in the Olympics.

The Rink at the Square is 7,200 square feet, the largest outdoor ice skating rink between Baltimore and Washington, DC and the largest in Montgomery County, Maryland

"This is a wonderful community event. Our kids couldn't wait to come and skate and I've seen so many of my neighbors here enjoying the cold temperature while drinking hot chocolate. It seems that everyone from Rockville is here to celebrate," said Rockville resident Ernestine Maust.
